CW Headshot 2

Carl Watts

Storage Leader, Library of Congress

Carl Watts is a storage architect with 30+ years in enterprise data systems. His background spans enterprise storage environments and every major tape format—from 2-inch reel, D2, and DLT to modern BaFe-based systems like T10000 and LTO-9/10. He has designed and operated multi-petabyte object-storage and NFS/S3 estates, engineered high-volume archival workflows, and built large-scale fixity validation. Carl has led complex data migrations across heterogeneous platforms, developed tooling for metadata extraction, audit logging, and automation, and supported HPC-adjacent environments involving billions of files and sustained multi-GB/s throughput. His work centers on reliability engineering, storage-lifecycle design, and long-horizon digital preservation at scale.
